FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DON'T BE SHY, JUST ASK

Q1:  How deep are Light and Motion lights and housings rated?
Our equipment is designed to operate to an approximate depth of 300 ft / 90m.

Q2:  How often should I send in my housing/light pods for service? How do I send it in?
We recommend a service every 1-2 years depending on use. This will ensure that all the O-rings, including the ones in the buttons and other moving parts, are greased and flexible. To arrange for service, go to the support page on our website and open a support ticket.

Q3:  How should I store my housing and lights?
It is OK to store the housing in the travel case and with the monitor back attached provided the housing and case are clean and dry. If the housing is stored for more than 6 months, it is recommended to replace the monitor back O-rings prior to its next use to prevent the O-ring shape from distorting. You should store your Sunray light batteries outside of the pods. Sola lights should be recharged once every 4-8 weeks to maintain the batteries.

Q4:  How often should I grease/replace my O-rings?
You should inspect the O-rings every time a seal is broken. You should remove, clean and grease the O-rings and O-ring grooves as often as required to ensure a good seal and for peace of mind. Muck diving or bottom shooting typically demands that you remove and clean the O-ring system every time you open the housing. Shooting mid-water column usually doesn’t pollute the O-rings as much. You should replace your O-rings once a year, or immediately if an O-ring is pinched, cut, nicked, or otherwise unserviceable.

Q5:  Help! I don’t know how to turn my Sola off!
Make sure the switch is unlocked by twisting it so that it is oriented horizontally relative to the light’s face. Push the switch all the way forward or all the way back for two seconds to turn off the light.

Q6:  What do the coloured LED lights on my Sola mean?
The colour of the lights indicates battery life – green is full, amber is half, red is low, flashing red is very low. When the light is charging, the lights will go from red to amber to flashing green to solid green to indicate charge level. The number of lights illuminated indicates the brightness level.

Q7:  Now that the Sola has been released, will I still be able to get support for my Sunrays?
We will be able to perform annual services and basic maintenance on all but the very oldest of our Sunray lights for a long time to come. We will also continue to manufacture NiMH batteries for the Sunray lights for the foreseeable future. Availability of replacement LEDs and other internal circuitry will be subject to available supplies. As always, the best way to repair flood damage is to prevent it from happening in the first place, so make sure to take care with your o-ring maintenance.

Q8:  What does the green blinky light on my Sunray battery pod mean?
When the green LED is blinking at an approximate rate of 1 blink per second, it is indicating that the battery pod IR receiver is in the ‘awake’ state and capable of receiving signals from the housing. When the LED is blinking more rapidly, approximately 3 times per second, it is indicating a low battery status.

Q9:  How often should I charge my Sunray batteries? How should I store them?
It is important to charge the light batteries once every 2–3 months to maintain the batteries’ capacity. You should plug your charger directly into the wall rather than using a power strip. This ensures that the charger gets enough amperage to charge the batteries sufficiently. Be sure to store your batteries OUTSIDE of the pods. Storing the batteries in your pods for more than a few days will completely discharge and damage them, and void your battery warranty.

Q10:  The charger for my Sunray lights is flashing orange and green. What does that mean?
The capacity of the battery has dropped too low and the charger is attempting to revive the battery. Leave the battery on the charger for 24 hours. Again, it is preferable to plug your charger DIRECTLY into the wall rather than on a power strip. If the charge light does not become solid indicating a charging status, the battery has been discharged for too long and needs to be replaced.

Q11:  Will my legacy Light & Motion light system fit on a newer Light & Motion housing?
If you have a Sola, you can mount it on almost any housing from any manufacturer. If you have a Sunray system, refer to the battery pod images on the lighting pages of our website. If your battery pods are the same style, then yes, your existing light system will work on our current housings.

Q12:  I have an older Light & Motion housing. Is it compatible with a new camcorder?
Probably not. Older housings were typically designed around the camcorders of that generation. In 2009 and 2010, we started designing our housings with an eye towards greater flexibility. Refer to the compatibility list for exact housing support.

Q13: The 2010 lenses sound amazing - will they work on my housing?
In 2010, Sony changed the width of their camera lenses, and we had to redesign all of our lenses to match. We’re very happy with the quality of the new lenses, but they are compatible only with the 2010 XR/CX 550 housings and later.

Q14:  How do I get the camcorder icons to appear on the Monitor Back?
You must change the camcorder’s default “Display Output” setting to “V-Out / Panel” or “V-Out/LCD”. Check your camcorder manual for more specific instructions.

Q15:  What type of batteries should I use for my Monitor Back and how long will they last?
We recommend rechargeable NiMH with a 2400 mA/hr capacity or higher. Bench tests for the OLED monitor back yielded 12 hour run times, the 2.7″ 16:9 LCD yielded 8 hour run times and our 2008 4:3 monitor yielded 3 hours.

Q16:  How often should I replace the batteries in my handles? What kind of batteries does it use?
It depends on the use of the system. A housing used 2-3 times a year will need to replace the batteries between year 2 and 3. A housing used daily will need to replace the batteries every 6 months. The handles use 1/3N Lithium batteries, and each handle uses two.

Q17:  How do I use the Light button on the handle with my Sunray lights?
To use the Light button on the handle: 1) the housing and camcorder must be ON. 2) The lights must first be turned ON by pressing the power button on the back of the battery pod. A green blinking light on the battery pod will indicate that the IR receiver is awake and can receive commands from the housing. 3) The round IR window on the battery pod must be directly under the triangular IR transmitter on the back of the housing to ensure transmission of signals.

Q18:  How often should I white-balance? Should I use my filter or my lights?
You should white-balance whenever the lighting conditions change. Typically you should apply a new white-balance setting if you change depth, change orientation to the Sun, turn your lights on or off, or any other condition that affects the colour or your subject. A general rule of thumb for your filter is: at 10-30 feet a filter will product acceptable results. Below 30 feet too much red and orange is absent and lights are required to return full colour to the subject.
